The Bisbee Copper Kings will be back on the diamond at Warren Ballpark this summer, with a new manager and a new crop of players, the team president says. “We’re looking at raising the level of play this year and going to Wichita next year,” said Tom Mosier, president of the semipro Copper Kings. Mosier says the merger of the Copper Kings with the Mesa Garden of Gears club will result in a greatly improved ball club. “Bill Moore is a great manager with connections in baseball all over the state of Arizona. We’ve already signed quite a few outstanding players from junior colleges and universities in Arizona and from out of state. We expect to be a very good ball club this year.” The Kings, a college summer league team now in their fourth year under owners Tom Mosier and Frank Barco, will be playing a 53-game season in the six-team Pacific Southwest Baseball League. Other teams in the league include the Casa Grande Cotton Kings, Tucson Outlaws, Tucson Yard Dogs and the Tucson Nationals. The season will get underway May 28 and 29, with home double headers scheduled against the Tucson Nationals, says Mosier. Non-league games will also be scheduled against the Flying Mustangs of Davis-Monthan Air Force Base and the Sierra Vista Aztecs. Bisbee will also host a Fourth of July Baseball Tournament again this year said Mosier. League games will be scheduled for Fridays and Saturdays. Non-league games will be played on Wednesday evenings. While many of the slots on the 25-player roster have already been filled, there is still room on the team for other motivated and talented ballplayers. “Tryouts will be held towards the end of May,” Mosier said. We’re looking for host families for our players who will be staying in Bisbee over the summer. We’re also looking for summer jobs for a few of our players.” For information on joining the Cooper Kings, contact Bill Moore at (602) 980-2372 or bill@bisbeecopperkings.com.
